Jo gave me an 8 lap race package for Christmas of 2012. I had scheduled it for March of 2013. I had to reschedule it to November 2013 because
I had my gallbladder taken out that week in March. In November would you believe it rained at
the Phoenix international speedway on the day I was to drive? So finally March 2014 everything fell in
place for the drive.
The way they do it is the cars go out on the track at different
time as they get each driver ready. They
put orange tape on the track to show were you are supposed to drive. You are to drive up to the tape but no
higher on the track than the tape. That
is because the area above the tape on the track is reserved for the professional
drivers that are doing drive along. (The
professional drivers are much faster) They
also put cones on the track next to the wall to mark where you need to start
slowing for the turn, were you should be at turn speed, and where you can get
back on it at the end of the turn. Each car is in contact with an observer that is watching you
from the observation deck. They are
there to coach you and try to keep you from doing anything stupid.
Also if someone
wants to pass you, your observer will tell you to lift and left. That means that you are to slow down and
move lower on the track so someone can go by you without going up into the
professional driver ride along area.
It was fun! When it was over if you would have asked me
how many laps I went, I would have told you they shorted me to 5 laps but the
video does not lie. I had all 8
laps. Each lap I drove a little faster.
